Breed History

Although the origin of the breed isn’t documented, they almost certainly descended from the drover dogs of ancient Rome who served as guards for flocks of animals. The name comes from “das Rote Wil,” which means “red tile” and is the name of a town where red-colored clay was discovered. The town was a major trade center for cattle and the dogs often pulled carts for butchers there.

When railroads and other modern means of transportation were invented, the need for the dogs lessened and they nearly became extinct until 1901 when they again became popular as police assistants and guard dogs.

Rottweilers Today

These splendid large dogs range from 23 to 27 inches and weigh between 90 and 110 pounds. Their fur is short and requires little grooming beyond a good brushing to remove the dead hairs that would otherwise end up all over your home. Always black with rust or mahogany markings on the face, throat, chest, legs, and rear, these fierce-looking but loving dogs are easily trained and serve in many different capacities ranging from family pet to police assistant.

Personality and the Perfect Owner

Unfortunately, Rottweilers have been tagged with a reputation for vicious behavior. On the contrary, with proper training they make excellent family pets. Calm, confident and loyal, they are dogs with a strong desire to protect those they love. This intelligent breed responds well to obedience training.
